Geta Matsuri Festival (Kamishima)/ January 1st
Before daybreak of the New Year’s Day, men residing on the island pierce awa (made by bundling oleaster brunches into a circular white ring about 2meters diameter and symbolizing the sun), using bamboos, raising and dropping it. It is one of Shinto rituals of Yatsushiro Jinja Shrine.
It is a festival to rid of evil and welcome the first sunrise wishing for a peaceful year.
